MESSAGE | Daily Guide 15 April 2022 | Scripture Union Devotional

Many people followed as Jesus was being led to Calvary to be crucified. What do you learn about the crowd that followed from vs.27, 35, 36? Many people are in the church today for different reasons. Why are you following Christ?

Apparently, Simon, a Pilgrim from Cyrene in Africa (v.26; Mark 15:21), was forced to carry Christ’s cross. Were he to recognise the One he was serving, he would have done it with great joy. It is significant that in his terrible condition at the time, Jesus should think not of Himself but of others. One thing Jesus did not do was to bemoan His pitiable condition. No, He bore the shame and mockery courageously.

See the other unusual response of the Lord in v.34 (cf. Matthew 5:43‐44). Note the criminals on the crosses by His sides (vs.32,39‐43). What lessons can we learn from each of them? While one mocked Jesus in His hour of death, the other prayed the most important prayer of all eternity (v.42). Some people have the privilege to speak with God at their hour of death, while some, even when they have that chance, speak blasphemy instead of praying.

Practice/Word Application
And so? Jesus, ‘the King of the Jews’. How do you treat your King today?
